L’île Bourbon, petite île dans l’océan Indien, est une colonie de plantation avec le système esclavagiste au cœur de son économie, de sa structure sociétale depuis le milieu du XVII-ème siècle. Les faits se déroulent au XIXème, Edmond est un jeune esclave, il n’est pas allé à l’école. Tout ce qu’il a appris, il le doit à lui-même, à son esprit d’analyse et au soutien de son maître Ferréol Bellier de Beaumont. Peu à peu, ses connaissances en botanique égalent celles d’un grand savant, Jean Michel Claude Richard, directeur du Jardin de l’état à St-Denis. Mais qui croirait qu’un jeune esclave puisse découvrir la solution à la pollinisation de la vanille, jusqu’à là improductive hors des terres sud-américaines? Monsieur Eugène Focard, greffier de justice et naturaliste prendra sa défense, mais la reconnaissance de la découverte d’Edmond Albius sera bien tardive.

Einer der größten Meilensteine auf dem Weg zur Demokratie, wie wir sie heute kennen, ist die Französische Revolution.

Im Spätsommer des Jahres 1789 hat die französische Nationalversammlung die Erklärung der Bürger- und Menschenrechte verabschiedet. Diese anerkennt das Volk als die oberste Macht im Staat (Volkssouveränität), und legt die Meinungsfreiheit, die Freiheit der Religion, die Gewaltenteilung, und die Pressefreiheit fest.

König Ludwig XVI. leistet jedoch hinhaltenden Widerstand, die erforderlichen Dokumente zu unterzeichnen. Er hat sich mit seiner Frau, Königin Marie Antoinette, dem gesamten Hofstaat und den meisten Adligen in sein Schloss in Versailles zurückgezogen. Dort führt die Königsfamilie auf Kosten des Volkes ein Luxusleben mit prunkvollen Festen, während die Menschen in Paris hungern.

Im Film begeben wir uns auf einen Pariser Markt. Es ist Anfang Oktober 1789 und die Menschen sind hungrig und aufgebracht.

Heute ist es eine Selbstverständlichkeit, dass jeder Österreicher und jede Österreicherin ab dem vollendeten 16. Lebensjahr wählen darf. Lange Zeit kämpften die Frauen jedoch für bessere Lebensumstände, für gleichberechtigte Teilhabe am öffentlichen, sozialen und kulturellen Leben. Frauen wollten neben dem Recht arbeiten zu gehen und eigenes Geld zu verdienen, auch die Möglichkeit zu schulischer und universitärer Bildung sowie das Recht auf politische Mitbestimmung - das Wahlrecht.

Das ist die Ausgangssituation in diesem Video, wir befinden uns in Wien: Wien ist zu dieser Zeit einerseits geprägt von Modernisierung und kultureller Blüte, andererseits ist das Elend der Massen allgegenwärtig. Es fehlt an leistbaren Wohnungen, Frauen dienen als billige Arbeitskräfte in der Industrie, beispielsweise in der Ziegelfabrik.

Am 19. März 1911 wird erstmals ein Internationaler Frauentag begangen. Es ist ein kühler Sonntagmorgen, in der Wiener Innenstadt treffen sich tausende Menschen, Männer und Frauen, um an der Demonstration über die Wiener Ringstraße teilzunehmen.

Athens, 1843. Greece is ruled by the Bavarian king Otto-whose reign was imposed on Greece by England, France and Russia , the great powers of Europe –and his wife Amalia. The country is in a dire financial situation, the land is in the hands of few, Otto replaces Greeks with Bavarians in the army. The palace is overshadowed by general hatred. For the last few months there were rumors that an uprsing was being planned.

September 2nd, 1843. It’s getting late. From the outskirts of Athens soldiers are approaching the capital. Their cries stir up the people. More and more are joining the crowd and are heading to the palace, leaded by a proud man on his horse: Colonel Kallergis, the military commander of Athens.

It is past midnight. However no one is sleeping. Thousands of people are now surrounding the palace. Cries demanding a constitution are shaking the atmosphere. What is King Otto going to do?

That night, Lambros, a young waterseller from the outskirts of Athens, became witness of the historical events that changed the history of modern Greece. Inside the palace, queen Amalia and her dearest lady of honour Rosa, are facing their own dilemmas. Let’s listen to them…

One of the greatest milestones on the road to democracy as we know it today is the French Revolution.

In the late summer of 1789, the French National Assembly adopted the Declaration of Civil and Human Rights. This recognises the people as the supreme power in the state (popular sovereignty), and establishes freedom of expression, freedom of religion, separation of powers, and freedom of the press.

King Louis XVI, however, stubbornly resisted signing the necessary documents. He withdrew to his palace in Versailles with his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, the entire court and most of the nobility. There, the royal family leads a life of luxury with glittering festivities at the expense of the people, while the people of Paris starve.

In the film we visit a Parisian market. It is early October 1789 and the people are hungry and upset.

Today it is naturally that men and women can vote from the age of 16. For a long time, women fought for better living conditions, for equal participation in public, social and cultural life. In addition to the right to work and earn money, women also asked for the opportunity for education as well as the right to political participation - the right to vote.

That is the starting point in this video located in Vienna: Vienna at this time is modern and cultural flourishing on the one hand, but on the other hand poverty of the masses is omnipresent. There is a lack of affordable housing, women serve as cheap laborers in industries, for example in the brick factory.

Η Ελλάδα κυβερνάται από τον Βαυαρό βασιλιά Όθωνα - του οποίου η βασιλεία επιβλήθηκε στην Ελλάδα από την Αγγλία, τη Γαλλία και τη Ρωσία , τις μεγάλες δυνάμεις της Ευρώπης - και τη σύζυγό του Αμαλία. Η χώρα βρίσκεται σε δεινή οικονομική κατάσταση, η γη βρίσκεται στα χέρια λίγων, ο Όθωνας αντικαθιστά τους Έλληνες αγωνιστές της Επανάστασης με Βαυαρούς στο στράτευμα. Το παλάτι συγκεντρώνει το λαϊκό μίσος. Τους τελευταίους μήνες κυκλοφορούσαν φήμες ότι σχεδιαζόταν επανάσταση.

2 Σεπτεμβρίου 1843. Είναι αργά. Από τα περίχωρα της Αθήνας στρατιώτες πλησιάζουν την πρωτεύουσα. Οι κραυγές τους ξεσηκώνουν τον κόσμο. Όλο και περισσότεροι ενώνονται με το πλήθος και κατευθύνονται προς το παλάτι, με επικεφαλής έναν περήφανο άνδρα πάνω στο άλογό του: τον συνταγματάρχη Καλλέργη, τον στρατιωτικό διοικητή της Αθήνας.

Περασμένα μεσάνυχτα. Ωστόσο στην πρωτεύουσα κανείς δεν κοιμάται. Χιλιάδες άνθρωποι περιβάλλουν τώρα το παλάτι. Οι κραυγές που απαιτούν σύνταγμα κλονίζουν την ατμόσφαιρα. Τι θα κάνει ο βασιλιάς Όθωνας;

Εκείνο το βράδυ, ο Λάμπρος, ένας νεαρός νερουλάς από τα περίχωρα της Αθήνας, έγινε μάρτυρας των ιστορικών γεγονότων που άλλαξαν την ιστορία της νεότερης Ελλάδας. Μέσα στο παλάτι, η βασίλισσα Αμαλία και η αγαπημένη της κυρία Ρόζα, αντιμετωπίζουν τα δικά τους διλήμματα. Ας τους ακούσουμε...
